Profesor Altieri hablará acerca de "agrobiodiversidad": depredadores y parásitos en el agroecosistema, como desarollar la biodiversidad, y ejemplos de sistemas de cultivos diversificados, con énfasis en las viñas de uva.

Todas las plagas que atacan nuestros cultivos sirven también como presa de otro insecto o huésped para algun hongo u otro patógeno. Estos "enemigos naturales" pueden limitar la población de la plaga para que no llegen ser problemas. El objetivo, entonces, en el manejo ecológico de plagas es diseñar un sistema agrícola que es más favorable a los enemigos naturales y menos favorable a las plagas.

All of the pests that attack our crops are also prey for predatory insects and hosts of fungal and bacterial pathogens. These "natural enemies" can limit the pest population and help prevent crop damage. The goal, then, of ecological pest management is to design agricultural systems that favor the natural enemies over the pests.

Directions:

Take Hwy 12/121 (towards Sonoma). Turn left on Duhig Road (at Domaine Carneros Winery). Huichica Vineyards and the Department of Fish & Game building are 2.6 miles from Hwy 121. Follow the signs. Park along the vineyard, do not park past the yellow gate! The meeting point is at the Dept. of Fish & Game building/barn.
