The Santa Subregional Water Reclamation System has been operating for more than 20 years with several successful expansions.
The most recent addition to the system, a cooperative effort between the City and Gallo Wineries, met a mutual need. The City was able to expand its reclamation system to compensate for additional growth, while providing a reliable supply of recycled water to Gallo during the irrigation season.
Gallo and the City proceeded on parallel paths for design and construction of the project. Gallo developed 350 acres of vineyards for irrigation and a 300 acre-foot reservoir. The City provided the piping and pumping facilities. The project was completed in 1997 at a $1 million cost to the City. Gallo’s cost is estimated to be similar.
The Subregional Reclamation System produces tertiary treated water and reuses 3.8 billion gallons of recycled water each year on more than 5,700 acres of mostly agricultural lands.
